Nuits Saint Georges 1er Cru
Les Terres Blanches
Nuits-St-Georges: One thinks immediately of red wine, and its true: Nuits-St-Georges whites are rare. Traditionally, winegrowers in the Cote de Nuits made their whites from pinot blanc. Our 1.3 ha of this wine contains only 10% of that variety.
The Vineyard
Vineyard placement and geology : The vines are in Premeaux, on the slope above Nuits-St-Georges 1er Cru red parcels, in a pocket of white sandy, oolitic soil with an abundance of limestone. The soil is light, well-drained, and easily workable, and strewn with white stones. Only a white wine would work well in this type of soil, and the parcel is planted in 90% chardonnay and 10% pinot blanc.
Vine age : 15 years on average
Yield and production : 40-50 hl/ha for an average annual production of 6500 bottles
The Wine
Vinification
Hand-harvested, the bunches are pressed whole, then fermented and matured in oak barrels – of which 20% are new -- for 12 months. The wine is then assembled in stainless steel tanks for an additional 4-5 months before bottling.
Tasting notes
Crystal clear and bright, the wine is pale gold with green tints in its youth, becoming progressively more golden with age.
The initial nose is light and floral, evolving into notes of ripe citrus and tart clementines. As the wine ages, the aromas turn to white peaches and elderberries.
The palate is rich with a noticeable freshness. The chardonnay component brings structure and a lovely. With a bit of age, minerality, with the pinot blanc adding complexity. The wine impressed with its depth, richness, complexity, length and individuality.
